Life

This is an old gem that I found while cleaning my room the other day – A poem written (I’m guessing) by my Dad called “Life”.

“We do not see the life that lives,
we only see the forms it gives.
We do not see the soul that wakes,
we only see the course it takes.

And yet we know that life is here.
To regulate the day and year,
To register through joy & pain,
To take the loss & count the gain.”

In his own Handwriting:

Dad's Poem

P.S. There’s a name scribbled on top in a different handwriting. It spells “M. Borha”. I don’t know if this was presented to that person or was composed (not written, obviously, because the handwriting is my Dad’s) by that person. If you are that person, enjoy reminiscing this. Open-mouthed smile

Who moved my house?

Finally we've moved out to a larger, better, cleaner, greener house after living in one for 52 years continuously.
The thought of leaving your neighbors, friends, the familiarity, the bond of staying in a particular neighbourhood for over half a century for my family and my entire life was indeed scary. I will not lie. But we've overcome it and thanks to an ex-colleague and friend Nagaraj, we've moved into this new neighbourhood and have fallen in love with it despite its woes like unmetalled roads and frequent telephone disconnections (twice in the last one week - something to do with Airtel and not the neighbourhood).
Following up with my previous post where I mentioned about Perfect packers and movers - those idiots said they're booked at three last moment despite me booking 2 weeks in advance. So, finally after enquiring a lot, decided to go with Laxmi packets & movers for 7k plus the tip of 600 to the workers - I know that wasn't necessary but the kind of hardship they went through to get one if cupboards up - you should've been there to see it.
This was quite far away from my sister's college but she had only three days of exams left when we had moved in. It has been almost a month since we moved in and we have gotten easily accustomed to the new way of life, here.
Looks like we are better than our neighbours downstairs in gathering information and getting our utilities in place.
We've transferred our gas connection, found where the post office is, the cheapest grocer, the cable TV, telephone, internet, everything's setup and running. Our neighbour, on the other hand are yet to figure out most of these things despite being here for more than two years, now. B-)
Like everywhere else, even here, electricians, carpenters and plumbers all act like they are Lords and getting their appointment must be harder than meeting the CM.
After a lot of haggling we've got the plug points and the plumbing ready for the fridge and washing machine but yet to get some nails nailed onto the walls. Life is very difficult without those wall clocks and clothes hangers.
So, apart from these few hiccups, we've begun to call this new house, our home. That's it for now. See you next time. Until then, happy reading.

Perfect Packers & Movers

My landlord has asked me to vacate and while I have finally, after a long and tiring search have found a nice house of a suitable size within my budget. Thanks, Nagaraj  :-).

While this is done, the hard work begins now. Clearing out junk that had accumulated in the last 50 years that we've been in this house. Yeah, you read it right. It is 50 years. Not a typo!

While my sweet sister has done a brilliant job and cleaned up most of the and has left very little remaining to be done, I enquired with one of the well known names in the packing space - Agarwal packers and movers. The sum quoted was quite staggering at 10k+tax!! for a 12km move of a typical 2BHK house within the city.

On advice from my colleague Amit and few other friends, while I was contemplating getting it all done by myself, hiring just the transport, I also tried looking for another option as doing everything on my own is going to be quite arduous and cumbersome.

I stumbled upon this "Perfect packets & movers" in RT Nagar on JustDial. Called them up. Some lady with a very sweet voice answered and asked me to call another mobile number that she dictated. On calling that, the person who answered, driving at the moment, offered to call back. I said fine, sceptical about the return call. After a few minutes, to my surprise, I get my call returned. Even greater surprise was the price quoted: 3.5k which includes transport; packaging material; packing; loading; unloading: unpacking and arranging! That seemed super awesome. Looks like I'm going to use their services after all.

Look forward to a follow up post about the move itself. Don't forget to leave your "Move story" in the comments below. So, until next time, "Happy moving"!

Pack bazaar - One stop packaging shop!

On scouring the internet to locate a place that sells bubble wrap, I stumbled upon the website of what looks like a one stop shop for all your packaging material needs.

I had called the toll free number yesterday but nobody had answered. I just thought that everyone must've called it a day. Didn't really expect anything else to happen. Had completely forgotten about it. To my pleasant surprise they called me back today. That was impressive.

Seems like they're located in Koramangala 1st block. Should check them out sometime.

Accidental Fitness

I don't know if it were the Gods of serendipity who conspired to do this but one day, the 26th of April, 2009, my phone started ringing at 6AM in the morning. Now, wondering who would be calling at this ungodly hour, I got up from bed to answer the phone. It was my friend Vinny who was going out for his daily run around the Jayamahal Park and wanted to know if I'd want to tag along. I don't know what had gotten into me or if I was just dreaming, half-asleep, but I said yes, got up from bed swiftly, got into my running attire and was ready in no time. My friend came along to pick me up and I went along to run with him.

After the first day’s running and stretching, had felt really rejuvenated and wanted to continue and make this a daily ritual. To my own surprise, I was able to keep up with this routine and had continued running for a couple of weeks until that fateful day of 12th May, 2011. I had completed my first run around the Jayamahal Park, enthusiastically, ahead of my friend. I looked back and saw my friend at a distance approaching me quite slowly. I noticed the beautiful pond inside the park through the grilled compound. Now, in Hindsight I think "Why did I do it?” I wanted to take a closer look and admire the pond's beauty and stepped on to the footpath from the road.

That's it! The footpath was made out of moulded concrete slabs covering the rainwater drain beneath it. I would have hardly stood on one of the slabs for a few seconds and it broke in the middle, in half, taking me into the gutter beneath, with it. All this happened so quickly that I could hardly get a holding of the compound grill of the park to prevent me from falling in. While the slab was falling in, it scraped both my ankles and when I landed at the base of the drain quicker than the broken slab, it had jammed my ankles. I wasn't able to move. Then my friend who had now reached closer to me took a while to come to terms with what had just happened and once reality struck him came running towards me to help me out.

In the meanwhile, I nudged out my jammed ankles from beneath the concrete pieces of the slab and had freed myself. My friend pulled me out and I wasn't able to walk. I had badly injured my ankles and any stretching of it caused terrible pain, but luckily I hadn't broken any bones or torn any ligaments. The injuries were superficial albeit painful.

My immediate reaction to this incident was "What if it was a small kid?”It could have been disastrous! If the slab had, for example, fallen on the head of a small child, it could have been fatal! To top it all, the gutter is almost 2 feet or more deep. Nobody except my friend noticed my plight that day. If it were a kid trapped under the broken slab inside the gutter, there is a very high probability that it could have gone unnoticed for hours and it could have been too late before help arrived. Now, THAT is scary! Isn't it?

BBMP's shoddy work and low quality slabs caused this to me. I would like some justice done with the persons responsible. Even some of the other slabs (not yet broken) have developed large cracks in them and it is only a matter of time before anyone else falls the same way.

It seems the project to repair the drains outside this park was done not too long ago according to BBMP's own site:

Thanks to Meera, of "Citizen Matters", for the link.

The project manager and others involved in this project must be brought to task. God knows how much percentage of the project cost these people have swallowed.

This injury had me spending on medication which I wasn't planning for. And besides, I am still not completely healed. There's still slight numbness and pain even after 2 weeks. BBMP should pay for all the pain, agony and suffering caused by their apathy!

eMBA, High School re-union, Gadgetize – Whatte weekend!

Disclaimer: This is more of a journal entry for me to remember this weekend. I’m just listing out the events. Don’t complain that it is boring and that I hadn’t warned you. Although, it has some pretty interesting links. Check them out and let me know if any of it interests you too.

“Oh you have an MBA? In that case, I’ll just show you how to do it!”

It all started with an SMS inviting me to attend a conference on eMBA (conducted by silicon India). I attended it and learnt about executive MBA programs that are on offer, their merits and comparisons with regular MBA programs and what is in it for me. Although the program on the whole was conducted a bit shabbily (It being a whole day program, expected the organizers to have some food arranged but to my disappointment, they hadn’t) I got to learn something from it.

This was followed by the high school re-union that I had organized for my school batch-mates. This happening 10 years after we had passed out from school had created a huge excitement in everyone and it turned out to be a memorable evening to be cherished for a long long time.

Next morning involved attending the Bangalore classic scooter club’s scooter rally which I was attending after a hiatus of over six months. So, naturally, I was excited. For those who didn’t know – Yes, I’m a scooter fanatic and I’m part of the Bangalore classic scooter club involved in the noble cause of SoS – “Save our scooters” campaign. More info about the rally can be found here. If you are already on Team-BHP, check out this thread.

That same evening was a more happening event called “Gadgetize”, organized by @tsuvik and @hnprashanth. Although this time around, this event was sponsored by Dell, the format was so informal without any agenda that we had an Amazing setting, Amazing Coffee, Amazing conversations with some amazing people. Had a great time with fellow geeks of Bangalore. It was at “Matteo Coffea” on Church street. Check it out if you are heading that way. A mesmerizing place.

I must admit. I had the one of the most eventful weekend of my life.
What was your most eventful weekend? What did it involve? Let me know.
